DESCRIPTION: APW - Ball Hamilton, "Ball & Co, Cleveland" signature on dial and mvt, Grade 974, 17J, 16S, heavy 14K gold OF original AWCCo case with five knuckle hinges, rear with applied gold Grand Army of the Republic emblem consisting of an eagle perched atop crossed cannons above an enameled American flag and five-pointed star with central logo reading "Grand Army of the Republic . 99. Veteran . 19," gold cuvette engraved "James Hayr Chairman of the Citizens Grand Army Committee on Free Quarters National Encampment, Cleveland, O., 1901, Presented by the Executive Committee," white enamel SS dial, SW-SS, nickel damascene, s#62110. Gross weight of assembled watch 70.1 dwt (109.0 g). A scarce and very attractive early Ball Hamilton with interesting military connection. Founded in 1866, the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was an association of Union Civil War veterans that was in existence until the death of its last member in 1956. James Hayr was born in 1838 and during the Civil War served in the Union Army within the Ohio 23rd Infantry as a private and sergeant. Following the war, Hayr was active with the Grand Army of the Republic and served as Chairmen of the Committee on Free Quarters as the present watch elegantly attests. CONDITION: Mvt: GRO...
CONDITION: Mvt: GRO, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, scattered micro-fine scratches, small four-digit service code lightly scribed on plate surface above s#; near flawless dial with some fine scratches within seconds-register, some micro-fine scratches and ultra-fine scratches to body of dial; near mint hands; case rear hinge pin is broken along one side allowing some play to knuckles on one side of hinge and allowing case rear to open a small touch wide of 90 degrees, uckle, case shows almost no wear, few short fine scratches on band near pendant, no dents or dings, excellent engraving detail, excellent details and enameling to applied emblem with only few specks of enamel loss to a few letters along bottom element; tight bow, crown shows light wear with small ridge break; glass crystal with few short fine scratches.
